-John Clang
“Working on this series, I explore how time moves in this seemingly static urban space. The people become the moving energy flowing through this space, marking the changes, forming the time. These images also explore my fascination that there are probably many time dimensions in this universe. We may have a ‘life’ that exists similarly on a different path, one minute before or after the one we’re living now. We merely just exist in this current dimension, and sometimes when time paths collide, we have déjà vu experience.”

Born in 1973 in Singapore, John Clang is a visual artist working in photography and film. He was born Ang Choon Leng and he received his Master of Art Fine Arts from LASALLE College of the Arts at the University of London in 2015. Clang lives and works in New York and in Singapore.
His fascination on time, displacement and existence influence his work. His works examine and raise questions of the world he lives in, providing not pictorial documentation but an intimate mental reflection of one man’s mind.
In the Time project of 2009, John Clang photographed pedestrian traffic along the streets of New York city at different times. Then he deconstructed the fluidity of the crowds tearing more photos in stripes, similar to the pieces of a broken mirror, and then putting the pieces together in a single frame. He shows the passing time in the assembly. The combination of several seconds fractions shows the time in a intimate visual collection.
He faces the issue of the passage of time by joining a crowd of strangers, different people at different times that can share a space without ever coming into contact with each other, are actually closer to each other and they travel at the same time shared, the one of the man.
