Pia Männikkö è un’artista finlandese, con sede a Helsinki, laureata al dipartimento di Scultura e Ambiente alla School of Art di Glasgow nel 2010, e ha conseguito un MFA in scultura alla Finnish Art Academy nel 2014.
La Männikkö osserva e ricrea percorsi fisici, raffiguranti piccoli intervalli di movimento e tempo all’interno di uno spazio, nella sua serie Déjà Vu. Usando tessuto di tulle e inchiostro, l’artista presenta una serie di sagome spettrali che si muovono attraverso diverse stanze, come se ogni pannello fosse un momento congelato nel tempo: ogni installazione, site-specific, presenta le tracce di una persona che si muove da un punto a un altro.
Pia Männikkö is a Finnish artist, based in Helsinki, who graduated from the Department of Sculpture and Environment at the School of Art in Glasgow in 2010, and earned an MFA in sculpture at the Finnish Art Academy in 2014.
Männikkö observes and re-creates physical paths, representing small and time intervals of movement within a space, in her series Déjà Vu. Using tulle fabric and ink, the artist presents a series of spectral shapes that move through different rooms, as if each panel was a moment frozen in time: each installation, site-specific, shows the outline of a person moving from one point to another.
Normalmente, quando camminiamo, le impronte fisiche sono lasciate alle nostre spalle, e dimenticate. Ma le creazioni di Pia Männikkö ci danno un’idea della capacità dello spazio fisico del corpo umano, tentando quindi in qualche modo di fermare il tempo e di ricordarci il nostro percorso. Queste installazioni ci permettono di contemplare i nostri passi, quello che pensavamo fosse un attimo fuggente del passato, di cui, se no, non potremmo nemmeno rendercene conto.
Normally, when we walk, the physical footprints are left behind us, and forgotten. But the Pia Männikkö’s creations give us an idea of the capabilities of the physical space of the human body, then somehow trying to stop time and remind us of our path. These facilities allow us to contemplate our steps, what we thought was a fleeting moment of the past, of which, otherwise, we could not even realizing it.
Le installazioni e sculture dell’artista sono state presentate in mostre ed happening d’arte, tra cui al Mänttä Art Festival e al Rovaniemi Art Museum in Finlandia, alla OpenArt Biennale di Örebro, Svezia, alla Galleria Armory a Sydney, Australia, alla Kraftwerk der Rathenau-Hallen, Berlino, e al Royal Scottish Academy di Edimburgo, in Scozia.
The artist’s installations and sculptures have been presented in exhibitions and art happenings, including the Mänttä Art Festival and the Rovaniemi Art Museum in Finland, the OpenArt Biennial in Örebro, Sweden, the Armory Gallery in Sydney, Australia, at Kraftwerk Rathenau-der Hallen, Berlin, and at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, Scotland.
