Roman Opalka (1931 – 2011) è un artista polacco di origine francese che dal 1965 intraprende una serie di opere parallele alla propria vita: Dètail. Dal 1965 al 2011, infatti, realizza quella che si potrebbe definire un’autobiografia visiva, costruita attraverso tele, accompagnate dalla foto quotidiana dell’autore e dalla registrazione audio della sua voce che pronuncia i numeri dipinti in polacco, “si conta sempre nella lingua materna”. Opalka rappresenta l’opera in parallelo alla propria vita, identifica se stesso con l’opera e l’opera con lo scorrere inesorabile del tempo della vita, conteggiando e testimoniando il suo passare.
