Beth Moon è una fotografa americana, con sede a San Francisco, che ha cominciato a fotografare alberi antichi mentre viveva in Inghilterra, nel 2001, senza fermarsi fino al 2015: “ho iniziato questo progetto mentre vivevo in Inghilterra quando ho fotografato la quercia Bowthorpe, una delle più grandi querce inglesi con una folta e frondosa corona di verde fogliame. Solo sei mesi più tardi, parte della corona è andata perduta a causa di una violenta tempesta. Questi alberi, più alti di molti edifici e di età superiore a molti dei nostri monumenti, vengono spesso dati per scontati. Altrettanto preoccupante è la minaccia di estinzione di molte specie. Per queste ragioni ho continuato il mio lavoro con maggiore urgenza“. Ha fotografato, dopo una documentazione accurata sui libri di storia e scienze, alcuni tra gli alberi del mondi più antichi, maestosi e con una storia importante: pini, sequoie, alberi di Giosué sulla costa ovest degli Stati Uniti e molti altri tipi di alberi in Africa, Medio Oriente, Europa e in Asia. “La grandiosità degli alberi spesso mi travolge, c’è un sacco di emozione da contenere. Non penso nemmeno di tirare fuori l’attrezzatura finché non sono in uno stato mentale adatto a concentrarmi e a far funzionare la macchina fotografica”.
Beth Moon is an American photographer, based in San Francisco, who began photographing ancient trees while living in England, in 2003, without stopping until 2015: “I started this project while I was living in England when I photographed the Bowthorpe oak, one of the largest English oak with a thick, leafy crown of green foliage. Only six months later, part of the crown has been lost due to a severe storm. These trees, taller than many buildings and older than many of our monuments, were often taken for granted. Equally worrying is the threat of extinction of many species. For these reasons I continued my work with greater urgency“. He photographed, after a thorough documentation on the history books and sciences, some of the oldest majestic trees and and with an important history of the world: pines, redwoods, the Joshua trees on the US west coast and many other types of trees Africa, Middle East, Europe and Asia. “The grandeur of the trees often overwhelms me, there’s a lot of emotion to contain. I do not even think of pulling out the equipment as long as they are not in a fit mental state to concentrate and to operate the camera“.
“Molti degli alberi che ho fotografato sono sopravvissuti perché sono fuori dalla portata della civiltà; su montagne, in proprietà private, o in un territorio protetto. Alcune specie esistono solo in alcune zone isolate del mondo. Per esempio, ci sono 6 specie di baobab spettacolari, che si trovano solo sull’isola di Madagascar. Purtroppo, il baobab è oggi una delle tre specie più minacciate sull’isola. I criteri che uso per la scelta di particolari alberi sono sostanzialmente tre: l’età, le dimensioni immense o la storia notevole. Ricerco le location documentandomi… Stando in piedi come i più grandi e più antichi monumenti viventi della terra, credo che questi alberi simbolici assumeranno una maggiore importanza, soprattutto in un momento in cui la nostra attenzione è rivolta a trovare modi migliori per vivere con l’ambiente, che celebra le meraviglie della natura che sono sopravvissute in tutta i secoli. Dandoci la sensazione del tempo, sviluppando un rapporto con il mondo naturale, portiamo la consapevolezza con noi come se diventasse una parte di ciò che siamo. Non riesco a immaginare un modo migliore per commemorare la vita degli alberi più spettacolari del mondo, molti dei quali sono in pericolo di distruzione, che esponendo i loro ritratti.”
“Many of the trees I have photographed have survived because they are out of reach of civilization; on mountainsides, private estates, or on protected land. Certain species exist only in a few isolated areas of the world. For example, there are 6 species of spectacular baobabs, found only on the island of Madagascar. Sadly, the baobab is now one of the three most endangered species on the island. The criteria I use for choosing particular trees are basically three: age, immense size or notable history. I research the locations by a number of methods… Standing as the earth’s largest and oldest living monuments, I believe these symbolic trees will take on a greater significance, especially at a time when our focus is directed at finding better ways to live with the environment, celebrating the wonders of nature that have survived throughout the centuries. By feeling a larger sense of time, developing a relationship with the natural world, we carry that awareness with us as it becomes a part of who we are. I cannot imagine a better way to commemorate the lives of the world’s most dramatic trees, many which are in danger of destruction, than by exhibiting their portraits.”
La Moon stampa le foto con una tecnica chiamata “stampa al platino”, un processo fotografico monocromatico che permette di avere la più ampia gamma di tonalità in bianco e nero e che produce toni che passano dal nero freddo al grigio neutro ai marroni seppia intensi.
Gli alberi che la Moon fotografa crescono in condizioni e luoghi diversi e lontani, ma tutti sono accomunati da un’esistenza orgogliosa, una bellezza misteriosa, e il potere di connetterci a un senso di natura e di tempo molto più grande di noi. Queste piante vecchissime condensano in se stesse la memoria, il passato, il presente il futuro. Sono la rappresentazione vivente che la natura ci dà del tempo.
Le fotografie di Beth Moon sono state pubblicate in molte riviste, ed esposte da gallerie negli Stati Uniti, Italia, Israele, Brasile e Dubai.
Sessanta tra le tante fotografie dei maestosi alberi sono state raccolte in un libro, pubblicato nel 2014 dalla casa editrice Abbeville Press, chiamato Ancient Trees: Portraits of Time.
The Moon print photos with a technique called “platinum print”, a photographic monochrome process that allows for the widest range of shades in black and white and that produces tones that go from the cold black to neutral gray to brown sepia intense.
Moon photographs trees that grow in different and distant conditions and places, but all are united by a proud life, a mysterious beauty, and power to connect us to a sense of nature and of time much greater than us. These plants are very old condense in themselves the memory, the past, present, future. They are the living representation that nature gives us time.
Beth Moon’s photographs have been published in many journals, and exhibited by galleries in the United States, Italy, Israel, Brazil and Dubai.
Sixty of the many photographs of the majestic trees have been collected in a book, published in 2014 by the publishing house Abbeville Press, called Ancient Trees: Portraits of Time.
