Cosa significa “tempo”? “Mi piacciono le storie che si svolgono nel corso degli anni. Sto pensando ai romanzi o film, o anche alle canzoni. In questo senso, mi piace molto anche vedere retrospettive di artisti che hanno lavorato e prodotto per diversi decenni. Io in realtà non so come rispondere a questa domanda, ma posso dire che mi piace riempire il tempo, anche con una specie di lentezza.”

What does time mean to you? “I like stories that unfold over the years. I’m thinking of novels or movies, or even songs. In this sense, I also really like to see retrospectives of artists who have worked and produced over several decades. I don’t really know how to answer this question, but I can say that I like to fill time, even with a kind of slowness.”

Federico Pietrella è un artista di origine italiana classe 1975, che ha studiato belle arti a Roma e da anni vive e lavora a Berlino.
Apparentemente le sue opere sembrano normali dipinti tradizionali: ritratti, nature morte, paesaggi e scorci di città. Solo avvicinandosi e guardandole meglio si nota che in realtà le immagini e i chiaroscuri sono formati da una particolare tecnica: le date.
Infatti Pietrella ha iniziato a usare timbri datari per realizzare i suoi lavori nel 1997, nel corso di un progetto di Erasmus ad Anversa: “Ero alla ricerca di un semplice strumento da utilizzare per tenere traccia del tempo in una città straniera. Poi, mentre ero al lavoro su altri tipi di opere, ho continuato a fare quadri con timbri datari. L’idea di utilizzare questo strumento deriva probabilmente da un vecchio timbro che mio padre aveva, e che ho ancora in un cassetto da qualche parte.”
Federico Pietrella is an italian artist born in 1975, who studied fine arts in Rome and has been living and working in Berlin.
Apparently his works seem normal traditional paintings: portraits, still lifes, landscapes and city views. Only approaching and looking them better we note that in fact the images and the chiaroscuro are formed by a special technique: the dates.
In fact Pietrella began using datestamps to accomplish its work in 1997, during an Erasmus project in Antwerp: “ I was looking for a simple tool that I could use to keep track of the time in a foreign city. Then, while working on other kinds of work, I continued to make paintings with datestamps. The idea to use this tool probably comes from an old stamp my father had that I still have in a drawer somewhere.”
E proprio il tempo è il fil rouge dei suoi capolavori, che a volte vengono realizzati in un giorno, a volte non prima di due mesi di lavoro. Ogni opera testimonia la durata della sua realizzazione: l’artista usa la data del giorno corrente ogni volta che utilizza il timbro.
Pietrella è sempre stato affascinato dal tempo e dal suo incessante continuum. Ogni suo dipinto è un resoconto preciso dei giorni di lavoro, impressi nelle date, inchiostrate più o meno intensamente su un cuscinetto per timbri, stampate più o meno fittamente a formare iperrealistiche immagini.
Le opere di Pietrella ci parlano del tempo, del tempo dell’opera e di quello dell’artista.
And time is the leitmotif of his masterpieces, which are sometimes made in a day, sometimes not before two months of work. Each work bears witness to the life of his creation: the artist uses the current date each time he uses the stamp.
Pietrella has always been fascinated by time and its incessant continuum. Every painting is an accurate account of working days, imprinted on the dates, inked more or less intensely on a stamp pad, pressed more or less tightly to form hyper-realistic images.
Pietrella’s works speak to us of the time, the artist’s time and the work one.
