Marylin Arsem è un’artista americana classe 1951. Dopo essersi laureata presso l’Università di Boston nel 1973, ha iniziato a lavorare nel campo dell’arte performativa dal 1975.
Nel 1977 ha fondato il Mobius Artist Group di Boston, un movimento di artisti interdisciplinari. Nel 2015 ha vinto il “Museum of Fine Arts, Boston’s Maud Morgan Prize 2015”, un premio che viene assegnato ogni due anni a una artista donna del Massachusetts e che consiste in una somma di 10.000$ con la possibilità di un’esposizione o un’esibizione presso l’MFA.
Dall’inizio del XXI secolo si è concentrata sull’arte site-specific, rispondendo alla storia o alla politica del Paese, impegnandosi con il paesaggio e materialità del luogo.
Ha partecipato a numerosi festival, e si esibisce in diverse città in tutto il mondo.
Marylin Arsem is an American artist born in 1951. After graduating at the University of Boston in 1973, she began working in the field of the performing arts since 1975.
In 1977 she founded the Mobius Artist Group of Boston, a movement of interdisciplinary artists. In 2015 she won the “Museum of Fine Arts, Boston’s Maud Morgan Prize 2015”, a prize that is awarded every two years to a woman artist of Massachusetts and which consists of a sum of $ 10,000 with the possibility of an exhibition or a ‘exhibition at the MFA.
Since the beginning of the XXI century she has focused on the art site-specific, responding to history or to the country’s political life with the landscape and the materiality of the place.
She has participated in many festivals, and she has performed in several cities around the world.
Dal 9 novembre 2015 al 19 febbraio 2016 si è esibita in “Marilyn Arsem: 100 Ways to Consider Time” presso la Galleria 261 dell’MFA (Museum of Fine Arts) di Boston.
Per sei ore al giorno, ogni giorno, per 100 giorni, Arsem è stata presente in galleria 261, inserendo la sua presenza viva nell’ambiente del Museo. La sua performance è un invito a fermarci e vivere il momento presente, un momento di pausa dal ritmo frenetico della vita moderna.
Ogni giorno la Arsem si focalizzava su una singola attività che segna il passaggio del tempo; fra le tante proposte dell’artista: contare senza interruzioni da uno a 5.800; passeggiare in percorsi circolari fino a raggiungere dieci miglia totali; fissare una sfera di ghiaccio che lentamente si scioglie; frantumare pietre di marmo fino a trasformarle in polvere.
Essendo una performing art, l’esibizione in sé riprende il tema del tempo: una performance è effimera, tutto ciò che rimane agli spettatori è la memoria di essa, un ricordo. Inoltre durante la performance Marilyn Arsem ha invitato gli spettatori a partecipare alla performance inviandole riflessioni sul concetto di tempo, tramite lettera, e-mail, Twitter o Instagram per tutto il corso della mostra. Tutto ciò è entrato a far parte della documentazione della performance di Arsem.
From 9 November 2015 to 19 February 2016 she has performed in “Marilyn Arsem: 100 Ways to Consider Time” at the Gallery 261 MFA (Museum of Fine Arts) in Boston.
For six hours a day, every day, for 100 days, Arsem was present in the gallery 261, entering his living presence in the environment of the Museum. Her performance is an invitation to stop and live the present moment, a break from the hectic pace of modern life.
Every day Arsem focused on a single activity that marks the passage of time; among the many artist’s proposals: count without interruption from one to 5,800; walk in circular paths to reach ten total miles; fix a ball of ice slowly melts; crushed marble stones until they turn into dust.
Being a performing art, the exhibition itself takes up the subject of time: a performance is ephemeral, all that is left to the audience is the memory of it, a memory. Also during the Marilyn Arsem performance has invited viewers to participate in the performance by sending reflections on the concept of time, by letter, e-mail, Twitter or Instagram throughout the course of the exhibition. All this is joined the documentation of the performance of Arsem.
